Vogue editor Dame Anna Wintour receives special recognition in King’s first Honours list

As the Chief Content Officer for Condé Nast Publications and the Global Editorial Director of Vogue, Dame Anna’s contributions to the industry have garnered widespread recognition. In a special acknowledgment from His Majesty, she joins an exclusive group of only three individuals to receive this distinction. At the age of 73, Dame Anna is renowned for her iconic bobbed haircut and oversized black sunglasses, becoming a style icon in her own right. Yet, it is her unwavering dedication to the fashion industry that truly sets her apart.
This year, in recognition of her invaluable services to fashion, she has been awarded the distinguished title of Member of the Order of the Companions by His Majesty. This prestigious accolade follows her appointment as a Dame Commander by the late Queen Elizabeth II six years ago, honoring her remarkable contributions to both fashion and journalism.
Dame Anna embarked on her illustrious career in 1970 when she joined Harper’s & Queen as an editorial assistant, following the merger of Harper’s Bazaar UK and Queen. Within a short span of five years, her talents were acknowledged, and she was hired as the junior fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar in New York. Though her tenure was brief, her journey was just beginning.
In 1983, Anna caught the attention of the editorial director of Condé Nast, Alex Liberman, and was hired by Vogue, where she became the first creative director of the esteemed publication, doubling her salary in the process. Just two years later, she assumed the role of editor for Vogue UK, succeeding Beatrix Miller.
Ever the trailblazer, Dame Anna temporarily departed from Vogue UK to work at House & Garden in New York, another esteemed Condé Nast publication. However, her true calling awaited her, and she ultimately took on the role of editor-in-chief for US Vogue in 1988, where she would leave an indelible mark for several decades.
While her responsibilities have evolved over the years, with her current positions including Editor-in-Chief of Vohue, Global Chief Content Officer for Condé Nast, and Artistic Director of Condé Nast, Dame Anna remains a prominent figure in the fashion world. Her influential presence is exemplified by her leadership in the renowned Met Gala, an annual event held in New York.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dame Anna has also captured the imagination of the public, becoming the subject of a highly successful novel and film. “The Devil Wears Prada,” penned by Lauren Weisberger, a former assistant to Wintour, loosely portrays her life. Although the character based on Anna, Miranda Priestly, is depicted as demanding and critical, it is important to recognize that artistic portrayals may deviate from reality. Claims surrounding Anna’s alleged threats to fashion designers during the production of the film were fervently denied by her spokesperson, reinforcing the importance of distinguishing between fiction and reality.
