Chat GPT : The AI chatbot talked up as a potential Google killer

Recently, the chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI), ChatGPT, has been making headlines for its various capabilities, from delivering sermons and giving relationship advice to passing exams and writing software.
Since its release by start-up OpenAI in December, the tool has been widely available for anyone to use, attracting a significant number of users who are seeking information for their daily lives. With its advanced AI technology, ChatGPT is causing concern for search engines like Google, Bing, and Baidu, who fear that it could eventually replace them.
ChatGPT was trained on a massive sample of text from the internet and is capable of understanding human language. Its human-like responses have revolutionized the way people think about querying information online. This has sparked a lot of discussion among experts, who are speculating about the impact of AI on various industries, including Silicon Valley. In December, Gmail developer Paul Buchheit predicted that AI would eliminate the search engine result page and cause total disruption for Google.
In response, Google announced its own rival AI algorithm, Bard, which is an experimental conversational AI service that answers users’ queries and participates in conversations. CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the soft launch would be made available to trusted testers before a public release in the coming weeks. However, the roll-out was not without its challenges, as Bard made a mistake in a promotional video posted to Twitter, causing the value of Google’s parent company Alphabet to drop by £100 billion. Experts suggested that the error was partly due to the firm’s decision to rush out Bard ahead of schedule due to increasing competition from ChatGPT and Microsoft.
Google is planning to release its own generative AI in search results
In a similar vein, Microsoft announced a new version of its Bing software, which is informed by real-time web data and features ChatGPT powers. When fully rolled out, the search engine will be able to provide clear and concise answers to users’ queries in plain language, drawn from web results and its own data vaults. If users are not satisfied with their initial results, they can chat with the bot to refine their search. A preview of the new Bing is available on desktop computers and will be available on mobile devices in the coming weeks.
Google, on the other hand, is planning to release its own generative AI in search results, alongside Bard. These multi-sentence responses will appear in a separate box at the top of the search page, similar to where definitions, calculations, and trading charts are currently displayed. Google executive Prabhakar Raghavan stated that the only limit to search will be the users’ imagination.
Overall, the advancement of AI technology and the rise of ChatGPT are causing great concern for traditional search engines, resulting in a race between the tech giants to dominate the market. While Google and Microsoft are working on their own AI algorithms and search engines, it remains to be seen if the search engines will rise to the occasion.
