Beloved music icon, Tina Turner, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, leaving behind a legacy that touched the hearts of millions. The Queen of Rock, renowned for her powerful voice and captivating performances, found solace in her tranquil haven situated in the picturesque town of Kusnacht, Switzerland. Surrounded by the serene beauty of Lake Zurich, Turner’s residence, affectionately known as Villa Algonquin, served as a sanctuary for the renowned singer and her partner, Erwin Bach.
In 1998, Turner and Bach found respite in Villa Algonquin, initially renting the property due to Swiss regulations on property ownership. However, their connection with the estate grew, and in 2013, after Turner became a Swiss citizen, she purchased the villa, an idyllic retreat where she later exchanged vows with Bach. Reports suggest that the acquisition cost a remarkable $76 million, a testament to Turner’s love for the place she called home.
Described as a fairy tale palace by visitors, Villa Algonquin exuded charm and elegance. Ivy gracefully embraced its walls, while gardeners meticulously tended to the surrounding shrubs. A captivating assortment of artwork adorned the interiors, including a life-sized sculpture of a two-legged horse suspended from a domed ceiling and a regal depiction of Turner herself as an Egyptian queen. Situated directly on the shores of Lake Zurich, Villa Algonquin encompassed an astounding 59,427 square feet of land. In addition to the main four-story building, a two-story boathouse and a sprawling garden added to the estate’s allure. Although ownership of the villa changed hands in 2020, with Ines Kaindi-Benes, head of a family-owned wood processing company, taking the reins, Turner and Bach were permitted to remain as tenants, ensuring that their cherished memories and legacy would endure within its walls.
Since the news of Tina Turner’s passing emerged, devoted fans from far and wide have gathered at the gates of Villa Algonquin. These gates, adorned with illuminated columns and the golden inscription “Algonquin,” now serve as a place of pilgrimage, where admirers leave heartfelt tributes.
